Overview
Rocksmith+ is a music-learning platform that combines interactive gameplay with a large catalog of songs and community-created content.
As part of the Rocksmith+ ecosystem, the Workshop Tool enables creators to build and publish custom song arrangements that can later be experienced by players within the platform.
I joined the project during an active development phase to support the evolution of the desktop application, refine existing experiences, improve accessibility compliance, and help shape new features while collaborating closely with design and engineering teams.
My Role
I was the primary UX owner for the Workshop Tool experience, working within a multidisciplinary team responsible for expanding and refining a specialized desktop application used by music creators.
My responsibilities included:
- Researching music notation systems and creator workflows.
- Refining and extending existing UX designs.
- Designing onboarding experiences for new users.
- Improving accessibility compliance across the application.
- Collaborating closely with engineers to align UX solutions with technical constraints.
- Supporting implementation through detailed specifications and handoff processes.
Learning a Specialized Domain
Designing for music creation required understanding workflows and concepts that are unfamiliar to most digital product teams.
To effectively contribute to the project, I conducted research into music notation systems, arrangement creation workflows, and creator expectations, building enough domain expertise to make informed design decisions.
Improving a Complex Creator Workflow
The Workshop Tool supports users creating musical arrangements that eventually become playable experiences for others.
I refined existing experiences and contributed to new functionality while ensuring workflows remained understandable and efficient for creators managing highly detailed musical content.
Designing the First-Time User Experience
Because the tool contains specialized functionality and terminology, onboarding was critical to helping new users understand how to get started.
I designed the FTUE experience to introduce key concepts, reduce initial complexity, and help creators become productive more quickly.
Driving Accessibility Improvements
Accessibility was a major consideration throughout the project.
I reviewed existing experiences and collaborated with stakeholders to identify areas requiring improvement, helping ensure the application better aligned with accessibility standards and usability best practices.
